The invisible jump from O Level to AS Chemistry

A focused transition course that rebuilds the four foundations AS Chemistry assumes, before weak foundations turn into a difficult first term.

The rules change before most students notice

A student can finish O Level or IGCSE Chemistry confident, walk into AS excited, and begin falling behind within the first term.

This is not necessarily an effort problem or an intelligence problem. The performance has changed.

Earlier Chemistry often rewards recall, recognition and direct calculation. AS increasingly asks the student to predict, justify, connect evidence to structure, and work backwards from information they have not seen in that form before.

Students keep using the methods that previously earned marks. They memorise more, practise familiar patterns and work longer. The marks still slip because the missing layer is reasoning.

Fix the foundations, not the first term

The obvious summer strategy is to race ahead into the AS syllabus. I do not think that is the best use of the transition.

Learning Term 1 early can create familiarity without depth. The student then meets the same material at school with half-remembered methods already in place.

The bridge goes narrower and deeper. It rebuilds four foundations that AS quietly assumes are already secure.

The four foundations

1. Moles and stoichiometry

At the earlier level, moles can feel like choosing a formula and substituting numbers. At AS, the calculation becomes a designed sequence: limiting reagents, gas calculations, back-titrations, percentage yield and several chemical relationships inside one problem.

The student has to see the route before touching the calculator.

2. Atomic structure as evidence

Electronic structure is no longer only a diagram to remember. Ionisation-energy patterns become evidence for shells and sub-shells. Students begin reading data to infer structure rather than reciting a model they were given.

That shift supports bonding and periodicity throughout AS and A2.

3. The forces inside the atom

Nuclear attraction, shielding and effective nuclear charge explain atomic radius, ionisation energy, electronegativity and many periodic patterns.

When students understand those forces, they need fewer disconnected trend statements. They can reason from the model.

4. Formulae, redox and equations

Oxidation states become a quantitative system rather than a slogan. Students use them to build half-equations, balance unfamiliar reactions and support later work in electrochemistry and inorganic Chemistry.

The goal is not a longer list of exceptions. It is a method that still works when the reaction is unfamiliar.

What a bridge session should feel like

This is a working course, not a preview lecture.

I teach the idea, work through a real problem while exposing the reasoning, and then students attempt the next problem themselves. They should leave each session having produced work, found a weak point and corrected it.

The bridge is not a magic grade machine and it is not a substitute for school. It is the foundation underneath the work the student will do at school.

Who it is for

This course is for students finishing O Level or IGCSE and entering Cambridge International AS Chemistry 9701.

Strong students use it to replace shallow familiarity with deeper reasoning. Students with gaps use it to repair those gaps before the pace increases. Both are making the same transition, even when their starting marks differ.
