Do not start A2 Chemistry cold.

A relaxed transition course that keeps the right AS ideas active and introduces the A2 territory they support, without turning the summer into another exam term.

Summer creates a cold start

AS examinations end. A long, deserved break begins. The Chemistry a student worked hard to build becomes less available, quietly enough that they do not notice it happening.

Then A2 begins by assuming the AS foundation is ready to use.

The student is asked to learn the hardest material of the qualification while simultaneously reconstructing last year’s energetics, equilibria, kinetics and redox. That double load is where the first term becomes unnecessarily difficult.

Warm beats intense

The answer is not to spend the summer grinding through A2.

Students need a real break. The bridge is deliberately lighter than an examination course: enough contact to keep key AS ideas available, followed by a calm first look at what A2 builds on top of them.

Familiarity is not mastery, and the bridge does not pretend otherwise. Its job is to make the first serious encounter at school feel like the second encounter, not the first.

The four areas A2 leans on hardest

1. Energy and entropy

AS energetics provides the starting language: Hess cycles, bond enthalpies and enthalpy changes. A2 extends that foundation into lattice energy, entropy and Gibbs free energy.

The bridge keeps the AS calculations warm and introduces why the A2 ideas are needed.

2. Equilibria

Dynamic equilibrium and Kc support the move into Kp, weak-acid equilibria, pH calculations and buffer solutions.

The mathematics becomes denser. Seeing the relationships once at a slower pace reduces the shock when the full treatment begins.

3. Kinetics

AS collision theory and qualitative rate reasoning lead into rate equations, reaction order and the rate constant.

One distinction matters early: a rate equation is determined experimentally. It is not read from the balanced chemical equation.

4. Electrochemistry

Oxidation numbers and half-equations extend into electrode potentials, the standard hydrogen electrode and the use of E values to predict whether a redox reaction is feasible.

This is also where the subject begins knitting together. Redox, thermodynamics and equilibria stop behaving like separate chapters.

Honest scope

The bridge does not finish A2 in advance.

It concentrates on the AS knowledge A2 needs most and gives students an early view of four connected areas. It does not attempt to cover the full organic, transition-metal or spectroscopy content that the school year and the full Alt course treat in depth.

The promise is narrower: keep AS Chemistry warm and soften the A2 landing.

Who it is for

This course is for students finishing AS and entering Cambridge International A2 Chemistry 9701.

It is useful whether the AS result was strong or fragile. Stronger students can see the connections further ahead. Students still repairing AS have time to stabilise the foundations before the pace rises.

The student does not need to plan a Chemistry degree. A warm start may matter even more when Chemistry is one demanding subject among several and cannot be allowed to consume emergency hours in the first term.
